What Are the Benefits of Family Dentistry?

Photo of young child at dentist officeAs family dentists, Drs. Belnap and Jergensen treat patients of all ages, from the very young to the elderly. You can experience the convenience of scheduling back-to-back dental appointments for your entire family rather than having to run around town at different times. There are also several other benefits to having a family dentist. Families tend to be more consistent about their routine dental care when the whole family goes to the same office. In addition, when parents bring their children to their own appointments, the children become comfortable with our office at a young age. When it is time for the children to see our dentists, the children are not as nervous.

Pediatric Dentistry

PQ Family Dental focuses on preventive care, especially for children. A patient who starts taking good care of their teeth as a child will be in better oral health and have fewer dental problems in the future. We recommend that parents schedule their child’s first dental appointment between the ages of two and four. At the first appointment, our dentist may just count your child’s baby teeth and take photos of their smile. We want each child to feel comfortable, so we take the time to ensure they have a positive experience. We even have a toy box in the lobby so that your child can get a prize when they leave.

Routine Visits

Drs. Belnap and Jergensen recommend a minimum of two dental checkups per year for all patients. At these visits, patients receive professional teeth cleaning to eliminate plaque buildup and prevent tooth decay. These routine appointments serve to catch dental issues, such as cavities, when they can be easily treated with a small filling or another conservative procedure. Fluoride treatments (trays and paint-on) and sealants can be particularly beneficial for children, but may benefit adult patients as well. Our doctors also perform oral cancer screenings for all patients as a precautionary measure. Once a year, our doctors will take x-rays of your mouth to detect cavities and other tooth and jaw issues. Our doctors also educate all of our patients in proper brushing and flossing techniques, and give recommendations regarding rinses and toothpastes to keep plaque from building in between visits.

Our goal as a family dental practice is to help you and your family achieve ideal oral health and to maintain that health for a lifetime.

Specialized Care

For patients who show signs of gum disease, we offer periodontal care such as scaling and root planing to provide a deep cleaning. We use Arestin®, a topical antibiotic to leave your gums completely free of infection. Laser gum treatments are also provided to remove inflamed gum tissue around the roots of teeth to relieve painful symptoms and promote healing. Our doctors can also perform most extractions. If you desire general anesthesia, we can refer you to a specialist. We also offer a wide range of general, cosmetic, and restorative services.
